Job Description Summary: UCAR is excited to announce 2 job openings for a Student Assistant III - HPC Research and Development. This position works with senior project staff on a wide range of technology and applications projects that support the NSF-NCAR Computational and Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) mission to deploy, support, and maintain high-performance computing, storage, networking, cloud, and software systems. What You Will Do: While specific tasks and level of complexity will depend on the skill set of the incumbent, the primary focus areas are: Collaborate with the High Performance Computing Division (HPCD) staff. Support and maintain the High Performance Computing Research & Development (HPCRD) lab equipment and environment. Assist with the installation, maintenance, administration, troubleshooting, benchmarking, and enhancement of HPC computing, storage, and networking systems, operating systems software, and related software products and tools. Additional responsibilities may include assisting with enhancements of the batch subsystems, resource management and scheduler software, parallel programs, compilers, accounting software, storage tuning, and analytics. This position will be leveraged across various CISL groups and staff, and the candidate will work with more experienced teammates in porting and running NCAR applications on experimental environments, including Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and Cloud. This position will be trained to mentor and collaborate with other HPC Research & Development (HPCRD) students and interns. Key Responsibilities: Gains experience with user application codes on existing and new hardware and software technologies. Learns how to support software products, system administration tools, and monitoring utilities in order to maximize the availability and flexibility of the experimental HPC systems. Works with mentors to develop new tools, analytics, and/or enhance available tools, analytics, and software subsystems for the experimental HPC environment. Tests and evaluates new computing, storage, and networking technologies, associated software stacks, and potential applications for NCAR applications. Develops knowledge and understanding of emerging technologies and how these might apply to enhance and improve the NCAR user experience. Assists with the preparation and delivery of technical reports and presentations on the research findings from this work. Assists with writing and presenting recommendations to HPCD management for HPC hardware and software products, configurations, and functional enhancements or upgrades. May also propose, research, design, and implement new projects, tools, or process improvements to benefit the team and the environment. Learns how to perform basic systems administration and maintenance of multi-vendor open source HPC systems and gains experience with monitoring the behavior of the experimental HPC systems on a routine, periodic basis to ensure proper and efficient operation of that equipment for all of the stakeholders. Helps plan and execute installations and upgrades to multi-vendor HPC software systems. The above statements describe the primary work being performed. What You Need: Education and Years of Experience Must be currently enrolled in a U.S. college, university, or professional school with a major in computer science, engineering, or related discipline. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Knowledge and understanding of computer, storage, and networking systems components Ability to work with a team and convey technical concepts to management and senior engineer Excellent oral and written communication skills Skill in organizing and prioritizing assignments Familiarity with Linux command line and at least one GNU/Linux distribution Desired: Experience with fundamental software and systems engineering concepts and practices Experience with at least one portable scripting language such as Python or Perl Experience with public cloud (e.g., AWS, Azure, etc.) Familiarity with macOS Familiarity with scientific visualization Familiarity with open source software development and distribution Familiarity with AI/ML/DL Familiarity with GPGPU programming Ability to mentor and train students and visitors Applicant Notes: A pre-employment screening is conducted in conjunction with an offer for employment.
