Summary: The Copy Editor, Medical Content, is part of the Medical and Health Content team. This team manages all patient-facing medical content on cancer.org, as well as in printed booklets, flyers, fact sheets, 3D interactives, videos, presentations, and other formats. The Copy Editor will work with Medical Editors and other subject matter experts to update our existing content on a regular basis, as well as create new content. This person will work collaboratively to ensure our content is understandable, consistent, and addresses the needs of a non medical audience. Major Responsibilities: Editing: ??Copy edits new and revised cancer information for clarity, accuracy, readability, style, and voice. ??Edits with the end user in mind (a non-medical and sometimes lower literacy audience) ensuring that content is formatted for easy scanning, follows a logical progression of ideas, and provides appropriate context for unfamiliar concepts. ??Collaborates with Medical Editors to determine the best editorial approach for new content and major revisions, as needed. ??Collaborates with editorial staff to help define and maintain a clear, concise writing style. ??Ensures that inline links are thoughtfully included to create forward paths to additional content. ??Collaborates with SEO team and Medical Editors to ensure content aligns with what users are searching for by addressing content gaps and adjusting language, while also maintaining accuracy and consistency across content. Management of web content: ??Creates, edits, publishes, and removes cancer information pages on cancer.org. ??Collaborates with UX team and Medical Editors to ensure page layouts best serve the content, while adhering to design standards and UX best practices. ??Identifies opportunities for enhancing cancer.org content with links, videos, images, interactives, and cross promotions of other resources. ??Monitors website quality improvement tools to find and fix typos, broken links, missing metadata, and other issues. Formal Knowledge: Bachelor?? degree in English, Journalism or other related field. Minimum Of Three Years Experience With Web-focused Editorial Work. Competencies/Skills: Editing: ??Proficiency in developmental editing, copy editing, and proofing content, preferably medical content. ??Experience editing web content. ??Knowledge of cultural diversity and other issues related to special populations. ??Knowledge of health literacy best practices. ??Ability to turn complex subjects into easy-to-understand content for a lay audience. ??Ability to collaborate on content with other editors, writers, and medical professionals. ??Familiarity with AMA editorial style preferred. Technology: ??Proficiency with Windows operating system and Office suite software. ??Proficiency with WCMS (Web Content Management Systems) to author content, preferably AEM (Adobe Experience Manager). ??Familiarity with general website best practices for SEO, user experience, and accessibility. ??Understanding of basic HTML and general web development concepts. ??Familiarity with project management and collaboration software, preferably Monday. Soft skills: ??Creative thinker. ??Careful attention to detail and accuracy in all work. ??Excellent time management and organizational skills to track projects and meet deadlines. ??Ability to prioritize and make decisions to balance multiple projects. ??Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with the Medical and Health Content team, other ACS teams, and vendors. Special Mental or Physical Demands: ??Work is normally performed in a typical interior/home office work environment. No or very limited physical effort required. ??Some travel may be required. ??No or very limited exposure to physical risk. The starting rate is $60,000 to $65,000. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
