We are seeking applications for the role of Economic Geologist to join the Economic Geology Team in Butte. The successful candidate will be involved in critical minerals studies across. This position, based in Butte, offers an opportunity to contribute to modern assessments of critical commodity resources with a focus on fieldwork, including geologic mapping, geochemical reconnaissance, and geophysical interpretations. Funded by federal grants, the role involves studying critical commodities at regional and deposit scales, primarily in western, with potential statewide projects. The position, expected to be funded for at least three years, presents ongoing opportunities for additional funding initiatives. Please note that this position does not involve tenure or teaching responsibilities.
Responsibilities
Conduct field, laboratory, and desktop studies of critical commodity resource data, emphasizing geologic mapping, geochemistry, and mine waste characterization.
Compile geologic data, historic mine records, and conduct mine site visits and sampling campaigns.
Utilize ArcGIS geodatabase construction and familiarity with the USGS GeMS schema.
Engage in extensive fieldwork at active and inactive mine sites, including quadrangle geologic mapping in remote and challenging terrain.
Provide institutional and public service through workshops, presentations, and outreach activities.
Offer mineralogy and geochemistry expertise to other MBMG programs.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in geology or related field with a minimum of 3 years of experience, or a Master's degree in geology or related field by June 30, 2024.
Completion of fundamental courses in geologic mapping and related subjects.
Excellent communication skills.
Proficiency with word-processing and spreadsheet software.
Valid driver's license or ability to acquire one.
Preferred Qualifications
M.S. in geology and geologic mapping experience.
Proficiency with GIS.
Experience in collecting, managing, and interpreting geoscience sample data.
Professional experience related to economic geology, mineralogy, acid mine drainage, GIS, mineral processing, and/or field geology.
Demonstrated interest in critical minerals and rare earth elements.
Familiarity with the USGS critical mineral commodities list and historic precious- and base-metal deposits.
Experience with the USGS GeMS geodatabase schema.
Strong writing skills demonstrated through relevant scientific publications and reports.
Physical Demands
Ability to conduct fieldwork independently in difficult, remote terrain.
Capability to work alone in isolated areas.
Capacity to pack rock samples over long distances and rough terrain.
Ability to work at a computer workstation for extended periods.
