CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a Fingerprint check. PROBATION: All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months. CLASS DESCRIPTION A Lactation Technician provides breastfeeding support and counseling to breastfeeding mothers in Women, Infants and Children (WIC) clinics and local hospitals. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive supervision from a Registered Dietician. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in a clinic or hospital setting. Work requires minimal physical exertion. SELECTION PROCESS All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must: EDUCATION: Have an associate degree from an accredited college or university. AND EXPERIENCE: Have two years of experience providing breastfeeding instructions to mothers and their infants in clinics or hospitals. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Current certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) by the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultant Examiners. Employees must maintain current certification as an IBCLC for continued employment or failure to do so will result in termination of employment. Copy of applicant?s current certification must accompany application. KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of the current principles, techniques and practices of breastfeeding counseling, and lactation support. Knowledge of dietary and lifestyle changes that addresses the nutritional needs of nursing mothers and breastfeeding infants. Skill in breastfeeding clinical instruction and counseling. Skill in interviewing techniques. Ability to monitor and evaluate breastfeeding mothers. EXAMINATION PROCESS Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the qualifications for this recruitment. The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position.
